Have you ever been asleep and had somebody try to wake you up and in doing

so they turned on the brightest light in the room? That is a horrible thing isn’t it?

Why? Because we want to sleep! We say things like “Five more minutes………..”

and try to drift away again, but once the big light is turned on then you have to

make a decision. Once the big light is on you can’t just stay asleep where the light

can shine on you. You have to either pull the covers over your eyes or get up.

God has called us to be a light in a dark world. He has called us to help people

come out of their spiritual sleep and be led to a place of effectiveness in their

lives. God’s desire is that one day that people would be able to say of you that

you were a lamp that gave off brilliant light. You were one whose heart was lifted

to the Lord in such a way that people had to look up to see where the light was

coming from, someone who realized that realized the urgency of the hour for

people to come to the Lord that you became completely dependent upon His

power in your life. You see, the brighter the light the more power is getting to

that light. If you hook up a low amount of power to a light that has the potential

to shine very bright, it won’t shine very bright. God wants you to know that

you have the potential to shine bright in this world, but you have to learn to be

completely dependent upon His flow. We do this by staying in prayer, walking in

His Spirit, coming to know Him more through His word and moving on that word.

God has called you to get the attention of this world through your relationship

with God.

So how do we do this? We first have to walk with God with everyone in mind and

not just us in mind. It’s not simply just about your next step with God, but it’s

about God’s overall mission for the world. We lift our hearts to God in a way that

is grateful for what He has done for us, but also in a way that that gratefulness

effects how we view everything else.

Second we need to realize our dire need of His power working in our lives.

John Wesley was a man who depended upon the power of God in his life. It

is recorded in one of his journal entries that he once went to a street corner

in England, sang a few hymns until he had gotten the attention of some of the

people, said “My name’s John Wesley and I’ll be back at” such and such a time.

He came back not knowing what to expect but depending upon God and as he

approached the corner he was singing from he had to push through the crowd to

get to the place because so many had come out to hear what he had to say. Later

in his life when asked why so many people came out to see him at his meetings

he said “Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to

watch you burn.” Allow the fire of God to consume you in your life. We do this

for two reasons 1) Because we want to be as close to the Lord as we can and 2)

if we don’t then there are people who will remain asleep and walking in the dark

until they are one day called to judgment. Being the light of the world isn’t just a

nice saying, but truly life and death hangs in the balance.

Speaking of Zion, an Old Testament picture of the church, God’s word says:

Isaiah 60:1-2 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord

rises upon you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the

peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.

Yes there is darkness on the earth, even thick darkness, but God has called you,

the local church, to shine the light of God’s glory on the earth so that people will

come to know Him. Even in this verse it says the two things you need to do to be

effective, “Arise, shine..” Position your heart toward the Lord, with those who

don’t know Him in mind, and shine brightly with His power flowing through your
